New Zealand’s electric vehicle penetration rate (for new car sales) spiked to 50% in December 2023. This is most likely due to looming tax changes that used to incentivize electric vehicles and disincentivize gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.

Buyers were probably taking advantage of the incentives before they end. Nevertheless, New Zealand’s electric vehicle penetration in November was still a promising 30%. The country’s electric vehicle penetration rate has been fluctuating between 29% and 34% in Q4 of 2023.

The top 5 best selling electric cars in New Zealand for December were the:

  • MG4: 622 units.
  • BYD Atto 3: 428 units.
  • Tesla Model Y: 356 units.
  • Tesla Model 3: 302 units.
  • BYD Dolphin: 163 units.

The top 5 best selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in New Zealand for December were:

  • Mitsubishi Outlander: 320 units.
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: 249 units.
