Samsung’s New Stretchy Screen Can Display Your Heartbeat

The South Korean electronic manufacturer Samsung made a stretchable OLED display that can monitor and display your heartbeat. The display can be stretched by 30% and Samsung says it can monitor your heartbeat more accurately than existing wearable devices — and for longer time periods.

Manufacturing electronic circuitry that can stretch significantly without damage is an impressive feat that most have failed to achieve thus far. One decision that helped to safely achieve this degree of elasticity is the use of the elastomer material instead of plastic to manufacture the display.

They fine-tuned the material’s molecular composition to increase its heat resistance and minimize stress. A stretchable electrode material was also used (cracked metal). The device’s elasticity also makes it less susceptible to inaccurate measurements that would otherwise be caused by wrist movements.
