A New Timex Smartwatch That Doesn’t Need A Phone

There is a new Timex smartwatch that doesn’t require a phone! It is the Timex Ironman One GPS+. Currently, there are Android watches that require an Android or iOS device because they are primarily just designed to control those devices. This means that if you stop using those platforms, you can’t use your watch anymore. Generally, if you purchase an accessory for a specific device, when that device eventually malfunctions or becomes obsolete, you have to purchase a new device and new accessories.

This is why i’m ecstatic to see that Timex finally created an independent smartwatch. The Ironman One GPS+ Timex smartwatch is capable of connecting to apps on its own due to its standalone wireless connectivity. It is also equipped with GPS capability, 4 GB of storage capacity, MP3 playback via bluetooth headset (perfect!), and it is water-resistant. The GPS capability enables people to find you if you’re lost in an emergency using ‘Find Me Mode’.

This Timex smartwatch technology was developed in collaboration with Qualcomm Connected Experiences Inc. (a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated) and AT&T. This Timex smartwatch will go on sale in AT&T as well as electronics and sports stores this fall starting at $400 (the price of some Pebble smartwatches), and there will be a more advanced model equipped with a heart rate monitor for $450.

According to a quote from Timex Group:

‘Wearables, including smartwatches, is an emerging category that holds significant promise for Qualcomm, and we are very pleased to have worked with Timex and AT&T on the development of the IRONMAN® ONE GPS+ sports watch and delivery platform,’ said Derek Aberle, President of Qualcomm Incorporated.

‘The watch combines the human wrist ergonomics expertise of Timex with proven Qualcomm technologies and will provide fitness enthusiasts with a truly unparalleled design and connected experience.’

‘Wearable devices like smartwatches can deliver so much more value for customers when they are fully connected, said Glenn Lurie, president of Emerging Enterprises and Partnerships, AT&T Mobility. “TIMEX® IRONMAN® ONE GPS+ is a perfect illustration. It gives the user a simplified yet robust experience he or she needs during and after a workout without having to rely on a smartphone.’

If this Timex smartwatch is true to their slogan: ‘it takes a lickin and it keeps on ticking’, as their conventional watches appear to be, i’ll be a happy customer in the future.
